If Sirius replaces the Sun

If our sun suddenly disappears and is replaced by one of the brightest stars in the universe – Sirius, what fate will our Earth face? This is not the plot of a science fiction novel, but an astronomical hypothesis worth exploring. Sirius, a younger, larger, and brighter star than the Sun, would have a profound and dramatic impact if it were to become our Sun.

Sirius, located in the constellation Canis Major, is the brightest star in the night sky, with a brightness 25 times that of the Sun. If it replaces the Sun, first of all, the orbit of the Earth will change. Due to Sirius having a mass twice that of the Sun, the Earth will be pulled into a more elliptical orbit, which will lead to extreme seasonal changes. At the same time, the temperature on the Earth’s surface will rise sharply. According to computer simulations, the surface temperature of the Earth will soar to about 400 degrees Celsius, making it unsuitable for any known form of life to survive. Moreover, the mass of Sirius is twice that of the Sun, which means that its gravitational pull on Earth will be stronger, which may cause drastic changes in ocean tides and even trigger global natural disasters.
